Stix and Yarn

It's amazing what you can create with a couple of sticks and a length of string.. well, the sticks have been sharpened and the string turned to yarn, but hey, it's not that different!

These Ekokid dolls and all their clothes and accessories have been made with a couple of pointy sticks - generally known as knitting needles (size 4mm, US 6, UK old 8) and double knitting yarn.

Start collecting scraps of yarn from fellow knitters - ask them first - and you can create a unique eco-friendly Barbie doll who's cuddly, dresses easily and won't max out the credit card.

I often see knitting needles in charity shops but even buyng them new won't make much of a dent in your purse, and they last for ever! And if you can't borrow any yarn to start you off, check out bundles of colours from ebay or amazon. Make sure it's 'double knitting' weight and you have a ball of flesh colour - whether pink, white, brown or green :-) for the main doll. All the other colours can be used for clothes and accessories.

You should get 4 basic dolls out of 100g of double knitting yarn, so even if you have to buy the basic doll colour new, again it won't be that expensive.

Grab a little soft toy filling and a skein of red and blue cotton silk for the features and you're almost done. Now, make a cuppa, put your feet up, turn on the kindle and get those needles clicking!

Recycling the witch!

Hi,

If you knit your witch in 'flesh colour' yarn rather than green, the witch costume can be put away for next year.

Then you can create a whole wardrobe of gorgeous clothes and your ekokid doll can take on any number of  new characters to suit your imagination!

A pattern for a basic wardrobe of ten items is available now and new patterns are being developed all the time.
