Christmas Special

During the long winter evenings, it's only too easy to sprawl on the couch with a bag of munchies. OR....get creative! It's amazing what you can produce with a couple of pointy sticks and a ball of yarn :-)

Okay, It's only just November, but these Ekokid dolls make fabulous home-made presents and are simple, fun and inexpensive to make.

There are plenty of outfits you can make for your Ekokid doll - design them yourself or pop over to Kindle and browse the patterns available right now!

Try this quick and fun to knit Ekokid doll with his or her very own Christmas outfit. This Kindle pattern book includes the basic doll pattern with a Christmas cloak, a Christmas hat, tunic and knickerbockers and a Christmas swag bag that could hold a small present or two!

Step by step knitting patterns using double knitting yarn and 4mm needles ((U.S size: 6 or old UK size: 8). You'll need some toy filling and a few bits and bobs to complete the Christmas Ekokid; cotton or silk for features, a length of ribbon for cloak and swag bag and a short length of elastic for knickerbockers!

Knitting up Magic

If you already have your Ekokid doll knitted, this charming witchy outfit will add an extra touch of magic to Halloween this year. The patterns can be knitted in any colours you choose. I found a particularly revolting shade of green - which works for a witch!

The cloak is knitted in spider stitch which is easy and quick to grow. Spider stitch is a simple variation of knit stitches and is described in the pattern.

To  make a halloween outfit for your ekokid doll you'll need:

40g. (about 90m) yarn for dress
10g. (about 23m) yarn for hat
30g. (about 70m) yarn for cloak
About 10m of yarn for belt and ankle warmers
A short length of ribbon

Purple Hats and Cats?

People outside of the knitting world often have a rather narrow view of knitters, assuming they must all be old ladies with cats and purple hats perhaps?

Knitting used to be male dominated until the ladies took over so spectacularly, alienating boys and men from one of the most creative, relaxing and practical crafts on the planet.

Studies have shown knitting can help patients recovering from trauma and calm symptoms of certain forms of dementia. Injured soldiers from the first world war were encouraged to knit as a form of therapy. More recently, research has shown that knitting also helps improve numeric and literacy skills.

Although a relatively inexpensive hobby, knitting has, for whatever reasons, been sidelined over the years but, as knitting groups start forming and more 'celebs' (even royalty I've heard) are taking up the sticks, knitting is creeping up the popular hobbies lists!

Yet another bonus is that knitting can burn 100 calories an hour - and isn't compatible with eating greasy or sticky snacks. Learning this simple craft will bring benefits to your whole family and beyond.

Start simple and make a blanket of squares or try an Ekokid doll designed for beginner knitters.

The picture above is part of a cover/blanket I made. I used 3 colours and knitted different pictures on squares, some I left plain but knitted in garter or blanket stitch. I'll be working out the graphs soon to put in a downloadable so you can try your hand at making a family hand-crafted heirloom - us knitters have no limits. :-)

Happy Medium

The final results of any craft project depend on many aspects. Different yarns - even if they all claim to be of a specific weight - e.g. double knitting - can produce different results due to manufacturing techniques, age of yarn, etc;

Also, tighter knitting will have different results to looser knitting - a happy medium is best!

When you make your Ekokid doll, the more filling you use, the fatter the doll will be - if it's too fat or too thin, the clothes patterns may need adjusting - again, go for a healthy mid-weight filling.

Check out all the Kindle Ekokid patterns on the Pattern Books page (menu above) and watch out for new patterns as they appear :-)

Stix and Yarn

It's amazing what you can create with a couple of sticks and a length of string.. well, the sticks have been sharpened and the string turned to yarn, but hey, it's not that different!

These Ekokid dolls and all their clothes and accessories have been made with a couple of pointy sticks - generally known as knitting needles (size 4mm, US 6, UK old 8) and double knitting yarn.

Start collecting scraps of yarn from fellow knitters - ask them first - and you can create a unique eco-friendly Barbie doll who's cuddly, dresses easily and won't max out the credit card.

I often see knitting needles in charity shops but even buyng them new won't make much of a dent in your purse, and they last for ever! And if you can't borrow any yarn to start you off, check out bundles of colours from ebay or amazon. Make sure it's 'double knitting' weight and you have a ball of flesh colour - whether pink, white, brown or green :-) for the main doll. All the other colours can be used for clothes and accessories.

You should get 4 basic dolls out of 100g of double knitting yarn, so even if you have to buy the basic doll colour new, again it won't be that expensive.

Grab a little soft toy filling and a skein of red and blue cotton silk for the features and you're almost done. Now, make a cuppa, put your feet up, turn on the kindle and get those needles clicking!
